A Field Team (led by Ryan Mieras and students Ashley Holsclaw, Tanner Allen Jernigan, Anna B. Miller, and Katherine Boot) conducted a NEER response for the storm the Weather Channel dubbed Winter Storm Kenan. The storm impacted the North Carolina coast in late January 2022, with the resulting erosion and wave overtopping causing two houses to collapse into the ocean. Prior to the storm landfall, the team deployed two 3D scanning LiDARs with overlapping fields of view, an atmospheric pressure sensor, two wave gauges, and three cameras. The observations are being used to understand interactions between waves, surge, currents, sediments, and structures, and formed the basis of a CSURF presentation (Holsclaw et al. 2022).
